This book is less a travel narrative then a collection of one man’s extensive travels around the world. The premise of the book (80 page-long stories) is a fun one but doesn’t always work as a book-length narrative as the flow is choppy. While it maybe shouldn’t be read straight through as a travel narrative, it is a great reference of stories for potential travelers, part guidebook and part individual adventure stories. Tomlinson even includes a handy index of places and types of travel featured.
The book showcases a number of interesting travel destinations and adventures off the beaten tourist path and serves as a both a resource and inspiration for anyone looking for where to go on their next trip abroad. Tomlinson falls into cliché a little too often, but for the most part the writing is both fun and informative. The destinations are explained and described well with both practical information and the writer’s own stories.
