Sub-genre: History
Publication Date: 2021
Not a traditional travel book, but excellent place-based writing as Clint Smith travels to plantations, cemeteries, prisons, and more across the United States and to Ghana to learn more about how about the history of slavery is tied into the history of the United States as a whole—and how that history affects life today. Excellent writing and I appreciated Smith’s openness to talk to and not jump to conclusions about the people he talks to and learns about. Honest and important, a highly-recommended read that really brings the reader into the places and stories Smith explores.
