The author takes us along her journey to explore and find meaning in the places of World War I battlefields and towns. I appreciated the balance between learning some of the history of the war and areas, and Gervat’s own reflections—and that Gervat never falls into the trap of some long-distance walking books of focusing just on her feet and trials of a hike. That I got a feel of these places today as well as insights on history that most of us are not taught in school, made this book special.
This is not a heavy tome of World War I history, but instead it is a short read that should be savored. Recommend to anyone who wants a good introduction to this important piece of world history that—as Gervat constantly reflects—still has impacts and echoes today.
