Book Review: On the Ganges by George Black

Stars: 4/5

Location: India, Bangladesh

Sub-genre: Travelogue

Publication Date: 2018

There is a lot to like about this book, in which author George Black follows the Ganges River downstream from the mountains to the delta. The book is presented in a series of short chapters, mostly vignettes about different people he interviews along the way. Black approaches the journey with the drive of a journalist, and only rarely do we hear more about the travels themselves or his own opinions. But his writing style keeps the story moving and he is refreshingly non-clichƩd and non-judgmental as he explores the history, religion, culture, and environmental issues surrounding the sacred river. A fair warning that that are a few serious issues of sex and violence detailed, so not a travel book for younger readers. Recommended as a great book to learn about the river and region.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
