Book Review: The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific by J. Maarten Troost

The Sex Life of Cannibals

Stars: 4.5/5

Location: Kiribati, South Pacific

Sub-genre: Travel memoir, humor

Publication Date: 2004

I was prepared to dislike this book—mainly because of the title which just seems to attempt to commercialize a culture and travel story—and after the first chapter, I was worried that the slacker-turned-adventurer storyline might ruin the book. However, I was happily surprised how much I enjoyed this travel story. Troost is an excellent narrator and adds just enough of himself into the story and provides excellent background on Kiribati. His writing is clear and humorous and I was happy to discover the book’s title is misleading: The Sex Lives of Cannibals has little about sex lives or cannibals and is all the better for it.
