Book Review: Welcome to Here: A Reluctant Traveler Goes to China by Nancy Yuktonis Solak

Stars: 3/5

Location: China

Sub-genre: Memoir, travelogue

Publication Date: 2018

There are many things I enjoyed about this book. Solak’s musings are often times refreshing and she can turn a clever phrase. I especially like the first part of the book, where Solak is a fresh-faced first time traveler to China, making the reader also feel her wonder as she follows around on a whirlwind tour of the country. She is to be commended for going so far out of her comfort zone. But the book reads a bit too much like a travel journal for my liking—did we need to know all the day-to-day details of her travels? The book would have been perhaps stronger had Solak embraced her storyteller more, and her every feeling less, but the book is still an insightful tale of, as Solak freely concedes, a reluctant traveler.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
