Book Review: Surviving Paradise by Peter Rudiak-Gould

Surviving Paradise

Stars: 4.5/5

Location: Marshall Islands, the Pacific

Sub-genre: Teaching abroad, anthropology

Publication date: 2009

Beautifully written, Surviving Paradise is a book about one man’s personal story of living away from his Western culture and a book with deep insights about Marshallese culture.

A fantastic read. I would have given itive stars if he had talked a bit more about his school life and if the epilogue hadn’t felt tacked on but even that provided interesting insight. Recommended to anyone who likes good travel writing.

Disclaimer: I have also been a volunteer with WorldTeach, though in Colombia, not the Marshall Islands.
