Favorite Travel Quotes

Writers, philosophers, and nomads across the globe have been writing about the travel for thousands of years. Men and women from all walks of life have written about the value of travel, the reasons to travel, and the debate about the “right” way to travel.

Here are a smattering of some of my favorite travel quotes, which I hope will inspire you to travel, think about how you travel, and maybe even enjoy a little armchair traveling:

“He who does not travel does not know the value of men [or women].”

– Moorish proverb

“Travel is the best way we have of rescuing the humanity of places, and saving them from abstraction and ideology.”

– Pico Ayer

“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.”

– Aldous Huxley

“There’s a reason to travel, to verify which way the world is going.”

– Paul Theroux

“When you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. It is designed to make its own people comfortable.”

– Clifton Fadiman

“Wandering re-establishes the original harmony which once existed between man and the universe.”

– Anatole France

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

– St. Augustine

And for travel writers…

Nothing bad ever happens to a writer: everything is material.”

– Garrison Keillor

  1. The one by Clifton Fadiman is my favorite! It’s a perfect reminder for travelers together with “Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints.”
